Arrival (2016)

Amy Adams makes the difficult work of communicating with visitors compelling before the film asks its larger questions about time and choice. Denis Villeneuve gives language, listening and uncertainty unusual dramatic weight. The quiet concentration distinguishes it from invasion stories organised chiefly around military response; preserve the surprises by knowing little more beforehand.
