Solaris (1972)

Andrei Tarkovsky turns a distant space station into a confrontation with memory, guilt and the limits of understanding another person. The familiar human forms complicate what an encounter with alien intelligence might mean. This is the 1972 Soviet film, whose reflective pace and emotional density distinguish it from both a space thriller and the later American adaptation.
