Alien (1979)

Ridley Scott makes a working spacecraft feel inhabited before turning its spaces into a trap. The crew's practical responses and the creature's disturbing design give the horror a strong material presence. It is a particularly effective choice when speculative world-building needs to serve sustained fear rather than a lengthy explanation of technology.
