The Terminator (1984)

James Cameron turns a time-travel premise into a tightly driven pursuit. The machine's implacability makes ordinary streets and interiors feel unsafe, while Linda Hamilton gives the human target more than a passive role. Its economical storytelling is a strong reason to begin with this original before the larger-scale developments of the sequel.
