The Quiet Earth (1985)

Bruno Lawrence makes apparent solitude after a scientific disaster feel both liberating and psychologically dangerous. Geoff Murphy uses familiar New Zealand places rather than elaborate futuristic sets to make the absence unsettling. A longstanding cult discovery, it is worth choosing for its changing emotional scale and its refusal to make the strange situation feel comfortably solved.
