The Dark Knight (2008)

Christopher Nolan builds a crime thriller around institutions trying to hold together under deliberate pressure. Heath Ledger's Joker is memorable because he changes the terms of every encounter. The final plotting is crowded, but the film's sustained moral and physical tension remains exceptional.
