Joan Fontaine's new bride enters a house whose absent former mistress seems to have organised everyone else's expectations. Hitchcock lets architecture, possessions and social judgement generate much of the menace. The Gothic romance is part of the thriller's method: uncertainty about being loved becomes difficult to separate from uncertainty about what happened before.
