Alfred Hitchcock makes romantic obsession a problem of looking, repetition and control. James Stewart's vulnerability becomes increasingly uncomfortable as the images he pursues acquire more power than the person before him. The suspense rewards close attention to colour and point of view rather than treating the film simply as a puzzle to solve.
