Shadow of a Doubt (1943)

Teresa Wright's excitement at a beloved uncle's visit gradually becomes a more difficult kind of attention. Joseph Cotten makes warmth and contempt coexist in a disturbing performance. Hitchcock uses the familiar small-town family setting to make suspicion feel intimate, giving the film a darker emotional pressure than a purely external pursuit would create.
