The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973)

Robert Mitchum makes an ageing criminal's limited options feel painfully concrete. Peter Yates follows a world of transactions, favours and compromised loyalties without making it glamorous. A celebrated crime-film discovery rather than a lost unknown, it offers suspense through the sense that everyone understands the rules and very few can afford to refuse them.
