Devil in a Blue Dress (1995)

Denzel Washington makes Easy Rawlins's improvised detective work both appealing and precarious in segregated postwar Los Angeles. Carl Franklin turns racial boundaries into practical limits on what an investigator can safely ask or assume. Don Cheadle brings a volatile extra charge; the film is worth finding for a social perspective that changes the familiar noir machinery.
