One False Move (1992)

Carl Franklin connects fleeing criminals with a small-town police chief whose enthusiasm conceals a more complicated personal life. Bill Paxton and Cynda Williams give the converging stories emotional force. The brutal opening sets a severe tone, but the film deserves attention for how carefully it changes the meaning of apparent simplicity in its characters.
