Das Boot (1981)

Wolfgang Petersen makes a submarine's confined working spaces intensely legible before putting their occupants under pressure. Routine, exhaustion and waiting matter as much as combat. This is the original 1981 film, available in substantially different cuts; the longer director's cut allows more time with the crew, while remaining distinct from later television productions.
