The Burmese Harp (1956)

Kon Ichikawa makes the aftermath of defeat a question of how to acknowledge the dead rather than simply return home. Music and a soldier's changing responsibilities give the film a reflective emotional centre. This is the 1956 black-and-white version, not Ichikawa's later remake; its calm beauty does not erase the scale of loss.
