The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)

Sergio Leone puts competing opportunists inside a Civil War whose destruction makes their private schemes look increasingly absurd. Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach provide sharply different energies. The music and stretched-out confrontations are famous, but the film's dark comedy gives the spectacle its distinctive instability.
