The Searchers (1956)

John Ford makes a pursuit across the American West reveal the disturbing convictions of the man driving it. John Wayne's forceful presence is both compelling and frightening. The landscape's beauty does not resolve the film's racial violence; its power lies in the tension between heroic expectation and an obsession that threatens the people it claims to serve.
