John Ford makes a small travelling group a lively test of social reputation and actual courage. The ensemble keeps class judgements visible as circumstances make passengers depend on one another. Its treatment of Native Americans reflects a deeply limited conventional viewpoint, while the economical character work and physical organisation of the journey remain central achievements.
