Howard Hawks makes a cattle drive depend on the uneasy relationship between John Wayne's authoritarian rancher and Montgomery Clift's younger challenger. The work of moving a herd gives the conflict physical scale. The film is strongest when command begins to separate from competence, exposing how personal pride can endanger an enterprise everyone else must keep alive.
