The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid (1972)

Philip Kaufman treats a famous outlaw episode as an unstable mixture of bluster, ambition and misjudgement. Cliff Robertson and Robert Duvall help make the criminal group less unified than legend might suggest. Its odd humour gives the reconstruction a distinctive angle, especially for viewers who enjoy a western puncturing its characters' confidence.
