The Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970)

Sam Peckinpah gives Jason Robards a comic, vulnerable role in a western about water, opportunity and a changing way of life. The modest business and tentative relationship matter as much as revenge. It is a useful discovery for viewers who know the director chiefly through spectacular violence and want to find his gentler, rueful humour.
