Ernest Marples
Person
Born
As transport minister, Marples backed the financial objectives of the British Railways Board's 1963 Beeching proposals and held a ministerial role in contested passenger-service closures. The report was a set of proposals, not an order that instantly shut every listed line, and closures continued under later administrations. He belongs here as a consequential retrenchment case: reducing railway costs and preserving communities' access to transport were different objectives that could conflict.
