The Dark Knight (2008)

Christopher Nolan makes Batman's capacity to impose order collide with a threat that exploits the city's institutions and moral compromises. Heath Ledger's volatility gives the conflict a disturbing human presence. The severe violence and sustained dread make this a crime epic for older viewers rather than a reassuring costumed adventure.
