Batman Returns (1992)

Tim Burton makes Gotham an expression of damaged desires rather than a neutral setting for heroics. Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman gives the film its sharpest mixture of anger, wit and longing. This is a grotesque, melancholy fairy tale with sexual menace and cruelty beneath the striking Christmas surfaces.
