They Call Me Jeeg (2016)

Gabriele Mainetti gives a petty criminal's unexpected powers a grimy Roman setting and an uncertain moral direction. Claudio Santamaria keeps the hero's reluctance close to ordinary selfishness. This celebrated Italian discovery offers an abrasive alternative to polished origin stories, with exploitation and severe violence beneath its developing concern for another person.
