Mary Poppins (1964)

Julie Andrews makes authority playful without losing its mystery, while songs and animated excursions reveal what the Banks household is missing. The film's generosity extends to the father as well as the children. Its longer, episodic shape works especially well when a household wants a musical afternoon rather than fast action.
