April and the Extraordinary World (2015)

The alternate-history Paris, mechanical inventions and talking cat give an inquisitive family plenty to notice. April's scientific work matters to the mystery rather than being a decorative sign that she is clever. The film earned substantial festival praise, but its place here is as an underused route into inventive science fiction for older children.
