The Great Wall (2016)

Colour-coded formations, mechanical defences and enormous creatures turn the fortress into an unusually readable action stage. Zhang Yimou's arrangement of bodies and banners is more persuasive than the visiting mercenary's centrality. The Western lead and thin character writing deserve scrutiny. Choose it for the military-fantasy spectacle, with those limitations in view rather than expecting historical realism.
