My Neighbor Totoro (1988)

Small observations of children, weather and a new home make the fantastic feel like an extension of everyday attention. Miyazaki trusts pauses and ordinary movement rather than manufacturing a villain. A wonderful choice for gentle visual storytelling, although anxiety about an ill parent gives its warmth a serious emotional foundation.
