Grave of the Fireflies (1988)

Takahata makes a wartime brother-and-sister story painfully concrete through hunger, domestic gestures and small failures of care. The animation's restraint keeps suffering from becoming grand spectacle. An essential adult use of the medium, but a profoundly distressing account of children in wartime, not a family recommendation despite its young protagonists.
