Princess Mononoke (1997)

Animals, machines and wounded bodies give Miyazaki's conflict over a forest a serious physical presence. A young traveller encounters a human settlement and a natural world whose competing needs resist a simple moral answer. The 1997 Japanese feature is a strong choice for adult-scale animated drama, with graphic injuries and a harsher atmosphere than his gentler fantasies.
