Pinocchio (1940)

A wooden boy's efforts to become responsible give Disney's technical virtuosity a surprisingly severe purpose. Effects, character movement and richly layered spaces all contribute to the sense that this world can tempt or swallow him. This is the 1940 animated original, with darker threats and a less comforting view of childhood than its familiar songs suggest.
