Fantasia (1940)

Disney's anthology treats music as a reason to change the rules of shape, motion and scale. Abstract passages sit beside comic character animation and frightening grandeur, making it a useful demonstration of the medium's range. The sequences vary in tone and strength; historical racial imagery and later edits are part of the film's complicated legacy.
