Drive (2011)

Nicolas Winding Refn makes pauses, glances and night-time movement give a familiar criminal predicament a distinctive rhythm. Ryan Gosling's stillness becomes compelling because it can change meaning so abruptly. The elegant surface contains sudden brutal violence, with the film's most persuasive suspense built from waiting rather than constant motion.
