The Swallows of Kabul (2019)

Watercolour-like drawing gives an account of life under Taliban rule a deceptive delicacy. Zabou Breitman and Eléa Gobbé-Mévellec keep attention on the costs of a few intimate decisions rather than explaining an entire society. A serious adult discovery with oppression and violence at its centre, whose beauty never makes the story an easy watch.
