At the 2015 ceremony, Jake Gyllenhaal was not nominated for Actor in a Leading Role; Eddie Redmayne won for The Theory of Everything. Lou Bloom's unnervingly eager manners are the case for reconsideration: self-improvement language becomes a way to negotiate away other people's boundaries. Gyllenhaal makes ambition physically watchful rather than simply loud. The performance is disturbing because the freelance cameraman can sound most reasonable when he is behaving worst.
