Chinatown (1974)

A private investigator's apparent command of a case steadily gives way to larger and more entrenched power. The period detail and controlled performances make each discovery feel like a shift in what the city means. A defining adult mystery, with incest, abuse and a devastatingly bleak outlook that should shape the viewing choice.
