The Godfather Part II (1974)

Two generations' stories make the family's rise and its emotional depletion illuminate each other. Coppola gives criminal power a grand scale without losing the loneliness it produces. It needs the first film and a long evening, but its structure rewards that investment with a more searching view of what the inherited empire costs.
