Patrick Caddell
Person
Caddell's role with Jimmy Carter placed a pollster inside the senior strategic discussion, rather than outside it supplying occasional numbers. In his oral history he describes a 1976 campaign organised around broad themes, while stressing that those themes came from Carter. The interesting relationship is between research and a candidate's convictions: polling informed interpretation and presentation without creating the candidate from scratch.
