Scott Pilgrim can face a spectacular boss battle more readily than an honest conversation about the girlfriend he has not properly left. Knives is treated as a problem to postpone while he pursues Ramona, leaving the people around him to supply the emotional administration. The arcade exaggeration makes his romantic self-absorption entertaining, and the film does challenge it. A friend should not need an extra life just to persuade you to apologise.

As bass guitarist for a garage-rock band, Scott Pilgrim has never had trouble getting a girlfriend; usually, the problem is getting rid of them. But when Ramona Flowers skates into his heart, he finds she has the most troublesome baggage of all: an army of ex-boyfriends who will stop at nothing to eliminate him from her list of suitors.
