Elphaba's outsider status gives the grand numbers something sharper than spectacle alone: a chance to insist on a self that the surrounding world misreads. The university setting makes friendship and status easy to follow. At roughly two hours forty minutes, and only the first part of the adaptation, it is a substantial rather than casual gateway.
