La La Land (2016)

The musical fantasy is part of what two ambitious people want from Los Angeles, which makes the shifts between buoyancy and disappointment meaningful. The opening spectacle is the big invitation; the quieter passages ask whether a lovely imagined life can coexist with an actual career. Its nostalgia is deliberate and not everyone's taste.
