Obama's years organising on Chicago's South Side belong in his political story before the presidential campaign. Gerald Kellman, who hired him in 1985, describes a young organiser learning through relationships with churches and residents. The useful distinction is between arriving with ideas and earning a place in an existing community. These institutions had their own leaders and history; they were not waiting for a future president to create them.
