Howard Dean
Person
Born
As Democratic National Committee chair in 2005, Dean promoted a fifty-state strategy intended to strengthen local and state party organisation, including places outside the usual presidential battlegrounds. Contemporary reporting shows assessments and organiser hiring being developed with state parties. His contribution was national backing for work on the ground. The initiative was neither a substitute for a political programme nor proof that organisation alone determined subsequent results.
