Born
Annan's UN secretary-generalship ended in 2006. Two years later, he led an African Union-mandated mediation effort during Kenya's post-election crisis. The February 2008 power-sharing agreement and subsequent dialogue offer a tangible example of diplomatic authority used after formal office. Kenyan political actors retained responsibility for the settlement and for implementing reforms beyond the immediate crisis.
