Jimmy Carter
Person
Born
Carter left the US presidency in 1981 and founded the Carter Center with Rosalynn Carter the following year. Its long involvement in the campaign against Guinea worm disease gives his post-presidential reputation a concrete foundation. Presidential access helped sustain attention, while national health programmes, specialists and community workers carried out the painstaking prevention and surveillance work.
