Martti Ahtisaari

On leaving Finland's presidency in 2000, Ahtisaari established the Crisis Management Initiative. In 2005 he and CMI mediated talks between Indonesia's government and the Free Aceh Movement, leading to the Helsinki peace agreement. The parties made the agreement; mediation helped them reach it. CMI's later follow-up work also makes this more than a story about a single signing ceremony.
