Mary Robinson
Person
Born
Robinson moved from Ireland's presidency to the UN High Commissionership for Human Rights in 1997. She pressed for human rights to be integrated across UN activity and used the office to investigate and publicise abuses. Later initiatives connected rights with globalisation and climate justice. Her second career changed the institutional setting of her advocacy, from a national presidency to international standards and public scrutiny.
