Winston Churchill

The Second World War is a six-volume commitment, best approached with a particular episode or question in mind. Churchill combined personal recollection with extensive wartime documents and privileged access to Whitehall material. Historian David Reynolds has traced the Cabinet Office's part in that process. The documentary density is valuable, but it is not proof of an independent history: the participant also helped organise the surviving story around his own leadership.
