A Promised Land is useful for following how a candidate becomes a president and how decisions look from inside that office. Its first-volume scope matters: it covers political formation and the earlier presidency, not the complete Obama administration. Read the explanations of competing pressures as the decision-maker's retrospective account, then ask how officials, legislators and people affected by those decisions would describe the same choices.
