Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)

Kevin Costner's Robin carries the adventure's steady moral position; Alan Rickman's Sheriff appears to think every scene is a chance to renegotiate the film's tone. A delayed word, a wounded look or a burst of petulance makes authority seem both ridiculous and dangerous. He is the ruler Robin must oppose, not an eccentric ally. The villain wins this comparison through comic unpredictability, while the hero has to keep the legend moving.
